From Mtstandard.com:

Painting wood to mimic interesting grain patterns originated in the late 1700's. It has its roots in the Renaissance with trompe-l'oeil. Painted wood grain, or "faux bios", became an art form by the Victorian Era and reached its peak during the Arts and Crafts movement in the early 20th century.
