Item Description

Give a solar lamp to light up the educational path of one household in Cameroon!

Cameroon lies along the equator line with a great amount of sunshine and comprises many children living in rural communities who do not have access to education and clean lighting facilities to study after school hours. The Pan African Centre for Climate Policy is currently working on a ‘dream education’ program whereby we are providing school fees to disadvantaged children in rural communities within the southwest region of Cameroon.

Coupled with this, we are also introducing our climate change manual in these schools to build schoolchildren’s knowledge and capacities on climate change impacts and its adaptation techniques through our climate change manuals. Many of these children will now have access to education and our climate change manual but will find it challenging to study after school hours.

Our project ‘light up my path’ we will be bringing in solar lamps to the homes of these children, so they get the chance to study at home and familiarize themselves with climate change knowledge from our climate change manual at ease.

While Education is the first and foremost right of every human being, climate change continuous to affect different gender in different ways. The introduction of climate change knowledge at early years of school ensures a sustainable future for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Literacy is the absolute precondition for education as it is a crucial step to acquire the basic skills needed to cope with the challenges children, youth and adults will face throughout their lives.

In many communities in Cameroon, children do not have the chance to adopt reading and writing skills. As an example, 38% of Cameroonian adults in rural areas cannot read, whereas women are even more disadvantaged. Reasons for illiteracy are beside generally on sparse school education and especially the lack of energy access. The problem is especially serious in the South West Region as over 60 percent of children there go to primary schools and live in homes that lack electricity. The lack of energy limits the quantity and quality of the children’s education.

We want to create the base for making education possible in the first place and the knowledge of climate change available at all levels. By giving solar-powered lamps to households with schoolchildren, in areas with poor energy supply, we enable them to improve their literacy skills and climate change knowledge. While the rechargeable lamps provide clean and safe lighting for the students and enable them to read and study, even after sunset, they will get to understand the dynamics of using the harsh sunrays to create a lasting solution to illiteracy in Cameroon.
