Item Description

Oil, 16x16 inches unframed, gallery frame 1.5 inches deep (no frame required)

The charming, historic coffee port of Jacmel is nestled in a bay a little more than two hours south of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince. It was established in 1698 by the French.

Since then, Jacmel has been through more than its share of difficulties. The city was devastated by a fire in 1896, rebuilt and then struck by a massive earthquake in 2010. Again in rebuilding mode, the beaches remain a Caribbean paradise, a place of respite from the city life not so far away.

Artist's Note:

The Caribbean light bounces off the nearby hills creating rich hues of color. The surf is inviting - busy and strong but also rhythmic and tranquilizing, all in the same instant.

Item Special Note

Hearts & Homes for Refugees Note:

Hearts & Homes for Refugees matched Marie*, a home health aide from Haiti, to a volunteer team from a church in Scarsdale, NY. Marie has no family nearby, and her volunteer team initially provided her with clothing, bedding and one month's rent. When she became pregnant a year later, the team reconnected with Marie and helped her get ready, with a crib, stroller and baby clothes.
