Item Description
Rare original Jo Mora carte of California. 25 x 19 inches, unframed. 1945 version. In original tube. From the collection of Herbert Heron, founder of Carmel's Forest Theater.
This is the second and smaller California map by Jo Mora, as well as being his last map (he died in 1947). The Del Monte Canning Company commissioned the map as promotional item. This map is candy for the eyes, full of historical details, creatively and colorfully presented. In fact this 1945 map is much more detailed than Mora's 1927 effort, and adds such new structures as the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges. See page 4 of Derek Hayes' excellent new book, Historical Atlas of California (Univ. of California) for a full-page reproduction of this wonderful map or carte as Mora preferred to describe his maps.
A wonderful example of this famous artist's marvelous whimsical "Topographic Cartes." Pictorial map of California richly illustrated with numerous pictorial illustrations showing locations of towns, natural formations, tourist attractions, local culture, products and animals. Examples of Mora's pun-oriented humor include Death Valley illustrated with a skeletal grim reaper, and Hollywood illustrated with a cameraman filming two actors.
His map work included Grand Canyon (1931), Yosemite (1931), Yellowstone (1936), Carmel-By-The-Sea (1942), California (1945) (large and small versions), Map of Los Angeles (1942), Monterey Peninsula (date unknown), and Seventeen Mile Drive (date unknown).
Joseph Jacinto "Jo" Mora, born 22 October 1876 in Uruguay, died 10 October 1947 in Monterey California. Jo Mora came to the United States as a child, he studied art in New York, then worked for Boston newspapers as a cartoonist. He was a man of many other talents including artist-historian, sculptor, painter, photographer, illustrator, muralist and author. All of his maps are highly prized by collectors.
