Item Description

There is a story attached to these mittens, well worth sharing. A lady in Chebeague Island Maine apparently used wool from island sheep to make these very thick mittens. Lobster people would wear them, alternatively dipping them into hot manifold water and then the freezing ocean. The mittens shrink to fit your hand. When your fingers feel chilly, just clap your hands together a few times, and your hands are instantly warm!

The Maine lady died, and the pattern with her, but a Yankee article in February 1983 wrote up her story and the author, Robin Hansen, figured out how to make them.  People need to order the wool especially from Bartlett Yarns in Maine, 3 ply worsted.

Peggy ordered the yarn, and made the mittens, which she is generously offered us to  auction.

Item Special Note

The mittens can be shrunk as much as required. Peggy will provide shrinking instructions to the successful bidder

”Some men took them home and soaked them in hot water; others put them in the bilge of their boats and walked on them all day while doing their work. And they shrank. ..as the fishermen wore them, wetting them each time in saltwater, they shrank and matted even more until they were shaped to his hands and quite stiff when dry.” ( Robin Hansen, Yankee magazine).
