Item Description

Donated by Café Legal (Cuban Lawyer Community)

There are certain items that are found in every Cuban home. They bring spice, scent, and luck to those within, and remind us that sharing is caring! Travel restrictions may be imposed, but not for the lucky owner of this basket! This basket has been composed with the generous donations and enthusiastic suggestions of members of the Cuban legal community in Chicago that support diversifying the legal community through the efforts of the DSF. Let the bidding begin!

For the Bar

·       Six or more cigars of various origins

·       One bottle of Havana Club Rum (because rum)

·       Two gold-rimmed rocks glasses (because you’re not in a Cuban home unless there are items Grandma says can’t go in the dishwasher)

·       Two bar towels (because someone is inevitably going to spill and Mom can’t know that happened)

·       A flamingo hat (because someone is going to need to wear one while drinking rum)

For the Kitchen

·       Memories of a Cuban Kitchen Cookbook by Joan Schwartz & Mary Urrutia Randelman (an amazing cookbook with authentic recipes and great stories)

·       Wooden cooking paddle (because if Mom can’t find her flip-flop to chuck at you when misbehaving, a wooden spoon does just as well)

·       Stove-top percolator (because Starbucks ain’t got nothing on homemade, industrial strength Cuban coffee made at home)

·       Four ceramic espresso cups (because you’re going to need a Café con Leche at breakfast, a Cortadito after lunch, a Café Cubano after dinner, and maybe one more for good measure before bed)

·       La Llave Cuban Coffee (there are a few brands, the preferred one hotly debated as with all things Cuban, but this one is a smooth-drinking staple in many Cuban homes)

·       Various pantry staples including long-grain rice, black beans, cumin, bay leaves, tomato paste, evaporated milk and condensed milk (because you can’t enjoy your first Congrí and two fried eggs for dinner unless you’ve already made flan for dessert)

For the Home

·       Royal Violets Agua de Colonia Baby Cologne/Room Spray (because this scent is used on almost every Cuban child, it evokes joy and cheek-pinching, and is also used in Cuban households as room spray)

·       Vintage Cuban Music CD set (somewhere you have a CD player, you know you do)

·       “Making Home in Havana” by Vincenzo Pietropaolo (because everyone needs a coffee table book while sipping rum and smoking a cigar)

·       A white candle (because it lights the home and rids it of all that might ail those within)

·       A mirror (because it’s good luck, and something should reflect good things including you!)
