Artist Statement
I'mperfect is a collection of porcelain vessels produced using the slip casting method. Over a period of 3 months, I cast the small vessels from various sized measuring cups. The work refers to the idea of perfection and measuring up to a standard of beauty, accomplishment, success. The method is generally utilized to reproduce uniform objects, though it is a manual process that can yield a wide range of results. After making several hundred vessels I embraced the uniqueness of each individual vessel and celebrated the 'imperfections'.
This series of 7 porcelain vessels were cast from forms of 1/3 and 1/4 measuring cups, made intentionally from a plaster mold that began to fall apart from overuse. The topography on the outside of the vessel is a sort of homage to the marks life makes in our quest for 'perfection'.
While porcelain is a very hard material, these objects have been fired in the kiln only one time, also known as bisque firing, or an intermediary stage of the ceramic process. This leaves the bisque objects porous and more fragile than a final firing; this also allows for the object to have a velvety quality and with the right light can create a sort of well of infinity, as the edges render nearly invisible. It is these ideas of fragility vs strength, infinity vs boundaries, flawlessness vs imperfection that I investigate through this work.
