Item Description

Hand crafted by master wood-worker Steve Weston. The chess board is made from Curly Maple and Claro Walnut. The table is made from mesquite with one  spot of inlaid turquoise.

Table is 30" long by 23" wide and stands 29" tall.

The Clara Walnut wood is from an orchard in Northern California. When old walnut trees begin to die and no longer produce walnuts, they are harvested and a new tree is planted.  The walnut is blended with mesquite from South Texas. In that region, mesquite is a weed and difficult to control, but it is marvelous for barbecuing steaks and may be available in somewhat limited amounts for furniture.  Mesquite is a very hard wood, harder than maple, and is known to have many flaws: cracks, worm homes, and grain that goes in any direction. But these flaws create a beautiful wood. The traditional "fix" for flaws of black epoxy can be found in a few places, along with a small piece of turquoise filling a knot hole. It is beautifully finished in traditional Tung oil. After a year or so, a patina begins to develop and the mesquite becomes quite beautiful.  If damage occurs, simply sand the area with 320 grit sandpaper and cover with several coats of Watco Tung Oil.

Perfect for exploring the game of chess,  there are convenient places to rest your arms with space on each side for captured pieces and a clock. If the table is too tall, simply trim the legs (evenly!).

The chess board may be removed (although why you would want to, it's too lovely) by loosening the four screws underneath the table. Each of the two drawers may be removed (again, why?) by opening the drawer part way and reaching up to turn the little post 90 degrees from where it is.
