Item Description

Michael Loveland Virtual Travel (Green), 2020 found beach umbrella fabric on wood backing, acrylic paint, and steel 32 x 20 x 6 inches.

Virtual Travel (Green), utilizes the portion of a found beach umbrella that transitions from kelly green to an anchoring fragment of cobalt blue. Michael Loveland capitalizes on the titular aspect of his work by using Virtual Travel (Green) to create an element of transcendent illusionism. Thick strokes of teal range in value, that both push and pull the cool palette of Loveland’s found canvas within the viewer’s eye. Not only do the optical effects begin a transitory dialogue, but the repurposed umbrella adds to the sentiment by transporting viewers to the sandy beaches and sunshine of Loveland’s hometown of Miami. He effectively creates an abstracted ocean constructed of the materials and memories of a sunny day.

Triangular sections of honeycombed steel give the piece added dimension that surpasses that accomplished by the acrylic fractals imbued on the canvas. The black metallic netting, built from the repurposed facade of an industrial speaker, juxtaposes the bright hues that lay behind it. The shadows cast upon the canvas are reiterated as painted impressions, where Loveland employs this metallic addition as a stamp, to further the variety of visual textures he has created. Virtual Travel (Green) stands as the elemental factor that transports one to the cooling aspects of life, recalled by a palette reflective of the salty waters of Miami shores.
