Item Description
French-American painter and printmaker John William Bailly has spent his career aiming to expose underbellies of accepted, written histories in order to understand the larger enigma that is humanity. He is continuously inspired by charged periods of conquest, colonization, and revolution. Deeply inspired by mythology, geography, and the diversity found within nature itself, Bailly employs these facets and pieces together a personal understanding of a universal experience. Within his practice he continuously reflects on charged historical periods regarding conquest, colonization, and revolution.
In Miami Bailly manipulates the city that inspires him through this reinterpretation via layering. This scenic rendering transforms various traditional maps of the Magic City to create a one-of-a-kind perspective through charcoal and graphite on paper. Miami is representative of the fine skill, and meticulous application that Bailly applies to each project. This meditative piece captures the marks of the artist, stripped of color in its rawest form.
