Item Description

Burrowing owls are one of the most humurous little owls full of crazy antics and energy.  A summer visitor in Colorado, these powerful hunters co-exist with prairie dogs in the grasslands, acting as colony lookouts and mimicing the warning calls of the prairie dogs to protect the whole group from predators.  Since the ground in the west is too hard for these small owls to dig thier own burrows, they rely entirely on the critically important prairie dogs to provide living quarters.  But a cactus can provide a great perch for hunting, with spines for added protection.

The burrowing owls' long legs make sprinting easy and excellent vision helps with hunting down prey, commonly small rodents, lizards, and insects.

Burrowing owls are a species of special concern in Colorado.  As prairie dog populations decline due to habitat loss and eradication, the burrowing owls have less burrows to access and thus less success in raising young.
