"Ghost Refuge" is an incredible, framed oil painting by Margie Lopez Read. Framed dimensions are 16" w x 14" h.
Margie is an artist who has passions for both painting and giving. A few years ago, she and her husband, Bob, decided that all of Margie's paintings would be donated to worthwhile causes. The Youth Garden Project is honored that Margie and Bob support our work.
The "Ghost Refuge" story
I have a yearly personal assignment to paint at least one of the unique buildings that are so typical of old Moab. This was my first for 2020. This home is small and old -- walking distance from my house – resting in a shady location adjacent to Mill Creek. Among all the homes there, it is by far the oldest. Motor vehicles are not allowed in this community, making it peaceful, quiet and safe.
I decided to call this cabin 'Ghost Refuge' because I have yet to see any signs of a living person using it – inside or out. Yet, I get the definite sense that it is being used somehow – perhaps by a ghost. It is also a good place to provide refuge if one needs a place to be away from others and to hide.
I wonder now if Ghost Refuge might be old enough to have been around during the flu pandemic of 1918 when the practice of quarantine became so necessary to prevent the spread of the deadly Spanish Flu. Perhaps the ghost that I imagine lives in this cabin was around for those times and is ready to remind us of what we need to do.
The final value of this painting for me, however, was the opportunity to share with you some sadness about what is occurring now. Painting it out helps.
