Item Description
This handpainted Woodcut print is truely priceless! Famed Namibian artist, Susan Mitchinson, who lost her battle with cancer in 2014, had achieved acclaim through her art and her love of Namibia. This rare woodcut expresses the emotion and vitality of the Cheetah capturing the mood and beauty of these magnificent creatures. Susan was a passionate conservationist, frequently donating her artwork to various wildlife charities, in particular CCF.
This print is one of only twenty hand-carved woodblock prints. This print, which measures 23.5" X 40.5" is perfect in every way but is just a tiny bit off center which can be addressed when it is framed. It's a true stroke of luck for the winning bidder because this is the last of these prints in Cheetah Conservation Fund's inventory.
The art career of Susan Mitchinson in Namibia spaned over a quarter century. Born and raised in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England, Susan was originally a student of literature who made an abrupt career change “when she realized you only have one life to do what you want.” At the University of Bordeaux, France, her influences were the Old Masters and particularly El Greco. Susan believed that her life in Africa made her work positive, solid, and spiritual. Her works take on many forms and she was best known for her black and white wood block prints. Susan believed that in the sculpting of wood print blocks she became a part of the artwork itself.
Susan’s legacy works have exhibited in many venues, including multiple exhibitions at the National Gallery of Art in Namibia. She was a long-time and dear friend of Dr. Laurie Marker who donated this print to support cheetah conservation.
