About the Artist
Luke Stavrowsky is the youngest son of famous western artist, Oleg Stavrowsky. Born in Oklahoma City, OK in 1963, Luke traveled quite a bit in his youth.
"Since my father worked for himself and loved to see new places, we moved around a lot. I grew up in Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Minnesota, Illinois, Washington State and California, just to name a few."
"When I decided to pursue painting as a profession, my father served as my mentor and instructor. He was tough! I'd work for days on a painting and he would look at it and say, "This is a bad area here, or this is awful there," and then proceed to take a brush and destroy my masterpiece within minutes. He never pulled any punches, but my gentle ego evolved. I always knew he cared. He's the most loving but misunderstood person I know."
"I feel truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to watch Oleg paint over the years. I couldn't help but learn just by looking at his paintings year in and year out. I learned by exposure, you could say."
Luke has spent the last ten years as a stay-at-home dad raising three children. "If you think painting is tough, try staying home with kids for ten hours a day, seven days a week. Van Gogh may have suffered, but there were moments when I'd have gone toe-to-toe with his pain and come out the victor! Moms - you know what I mean."
"My philosophy on painting is basically this: drawing and painting are all the same... it's design, not reproduction. I feel my job as an artist is to go beyond the obvious. If I can say something that can have a different meaning each time you look - I've got a painting. When I say it well, I have a good painting."
Luke lives just outside of Santa Fe New Mexico as well as in Texas.
Item Special Note
The original painting won an honorable mention award in Southwest Art Magazine's annual competition. Luke, who generously donated this painting, is father of SFSAS alumni students Tatyana, Lewis and Benjamin.
