"If you can read, you can go anywhere" or so the saying goes. I don't think I have ever wanted to travel more than in the year 2020. Where can you go if you can't go anywhere? To the library, as my mom always said, at the library you can go anywhere. As a voracious reader who preferred fantasy over reality, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll became an instant favorite. Here I imagined what it would be like if our school's mascot, Leonardo da Vinci, found himself amidst the fantastic characters of Caroll's imaginary world. I would like to think that Leonardo da Vinci would fit right in with the deeply philosophical yet wild characters of the Wonderland realm, who I'm sure would be just as entertained by his fantastical inventions. I took inspiration from the original illustrations as well as the movie retellings, by using only black and white paint, with silhouettes for the characters, flora, and fauna. Then for the edge, I went the cosmic route by painting celestial bodies along with symbols from the book (some of which are painted with glow in the dark paint) and a few of my own favorite moon flowers. I wanted this Hare to take us down the rabbit hole to another world, where we are free to dream, laugh, question reality and even who we are; just as I'm sure LdV and Carroll would have had us do during this most absurd year. (This artwork is double sided.)
