Item Description
This auction item is for Ulla Ringle's delightful children's book Elephant from the Taste of Paradise Island. It is about a baby elephant who falls into a well. He gets rescued and ends up in an elephant orphanage. The book tells his trials and tribulations and how he becomes famous! The book is signed by the author.
The story of Rhama is written in rhymes and is set against the illustrations of Debra Calderon (another WSOS donor!), who resides in Virginia.
Aimed for children 6-12 years old, although adults may enjoy it, too!
Paired with this book are 6 greeting cards based on original paintings by artist Ulla Ringle. Each card is 5 inches by 7 inches and blank inside.
About the Author: Ringle lived in Sri Lanka for a while and visited the working elephants and also the elephant orphanage. This experience inspired her to write about these wonderful creatures. Ringle was born in Germany and met her husband, Ernst, in Sri Lanka. She would regularly visit the working elephants at a dam construction site.
"We had friends who had big tea plantations, and baby elephants were treated like pets before they became too big and were trained for work," Ringle said. "We heard many, many stories about the intelligence, courage and devotion of elephants and their owners and trainers. So even though the book is fiction, some stories in there did happen."
