About the Artist:
John VandeWalle, Metal Artist
Born, educated, and working in Rock Island, IL, metal artist John VandeWalle has made his mark on the regional art scene by utilizing “waste” from the many industries that make their home in the Mississippi River Valley.
A blue collar area that has been home to such big names as John Deere and Caterpillar, Rock Island, IL and the surrounding area is populated by factories that regularly produce metal waste. The shapes that VandeWalle was seeing in local scrap yards eventually led him to an art career based on reusing those waste products, literally creating art from junk. According to VandeWalle, “This area is ripe with reusable material, and while exploring local scrap yards, I couldn’t help but see possibility. It sparks my imagination in a way few other mediums have.”
VandeWalle has a Studio Art degree from Augustana College, and it was while pursuing his education that he first learned to weld metal. Through continued study, VandeWalle has been able to take on larger projects and continue to challenge himself, and has exhibited his work regionally.
Metal sculptures are available for purchase at Skeleton Key Art and Antiques, a business owned by John VandeWalle and his wife, Brandy.
