Item Description

In this painting Raju finds cover under an elephant-ear plant -- And I'll bet you can guess how the plant gets its name!

Raju was rescued six years ago. He is 56 years old, but at times he seems like a much younger elephant, playing like a young bull. He loves his tire enrichment which he holds up in his trunk, twirls around, and throws into his pool with a big splash.

He is our most famous elephant, known as the elephant who cried. His tears during his rescue shook the core of everyone's hearts as the chains were removed and he embraced his independence on July 4. When we watch Raju munch on green fodder and sugarcane, in all his grandiosity, it inspires us to continue our work to save more lives.

Size: Original watercolor in 8 x 10 inch mat.

About the Artist: Belinda Stewart lives in St. Augustine, Florida. She works in all mediums but favors watercolors. She studied in private classes with famed watercolorist Mun Quan and art classes at Jacksonville University. All her watercolors are painted on professional Arches watercolor paper with Windsor Newton paints.

From the Artist: "Wildlife SOS has captured my heart with their ongoing love and care for all the animals retiring at their sanctuaries. From freeing Raju from chains and the legal battles to rescue sweet Mohan, it is an ongoing endeavor to save as many as possible. Since being retired, it has been pure joy seeing a photo posted of an elephant, bear or leopard and setting it aside to become inspiration for my watercolors and acrylics."
