Item Description

Forged steel knife, 13-3/8 inches long; Walnut wood display box, 17 x 5 x 6 inches

Artist: Kellar Wilson CO

This piece was forged from a Fire Truck leaf spring (5160 Steel), thermocycled 3 times, quenched, tempered and, finally, acid bathed and stonewashed. Both scales are a hybrid between charcoal (from the fire), infused resin and Burl. One side is dyed red and the other, kept clear. The box that houses the knife we built using wood from a Walnut tree in Fort Collins, CO and features a resin pour in the bottom of the box, also infused and filled with charcoal from the Cameron Peak Fire. The blade stands on a magnetic fixture inside the box to be displayed either lying down or as a shadow box.

This project meant a lot to me and my crew. I spent a lot of time up near Cameron Peak with my fiance- it was one of our favorite spots to visit throughout the year. It was distressing and heartbreaking to hear of the devastation. Watching the smoke gather and hang everyday was an utterly unique and somber experience, but I'm happy I got to take part in the Ashes to Art project and see something good come from the destruction.
