Item Description
“Time to Listen, Time to Speak”
These talking pieces, crafted in the PBMR Woodshop and painted by PBMR’s Young Women, remind us that healing is not a one-way process.
The Sankofa Bird fuses two seemingly contradicting impulses: to move forward and to look behind. The bird’s feet are facing forward, while its head faces backward, clutching its precious egg. This image reminds us that while we must move forward, we must never forget those who came before us and the wisdom of our elders. In a similar way, restorative justice philosophy holds that community healing can neither come by barreling ahead into the future and forgetting the future, nor by fixating on past traumas. Only by understanding and embracing our past together with the courage to make a change can our communities move forward toward healthy and holistic healing.

About the Artists: Talking Pieces were made by the artisans in the PBMR Woodshop, part of the Social Enterprises Program. Pieces painted for A Time to Heal Auction by members of the PBMR Young Women's Mentoring Group.
