Item Description
The raven is a mythological figure in several traditions. From the divine ravens Hugin and Munin (translating to thought and memory) in the Viking tradition[1] to Edgar Allan Poe’s chilling tale The Raven, we know ravens as ominous symbols of death or ill-fortune.
Members of the PBMR community may feel the presence of the raven when faced with the realities of generational trauma, police violence, and harsh prison sentences and conditions.
Artist Kevin Wagner communicates the solitude and solemnity of a 45-year prison sentence through his art. At the same time, this piece is hopeful: the bird’s strong wings soaring through the sky imagine the world on the outside, beyond the walls of the prison where the horizon stretches as far as the eye can see.
About the Artist: KEVIN WAGNER
Kevin has been painting and pursuing art for over 15 years while serving a sentence of forty-five years. Kevin is now 51 years old and hopes someday that the truth-in-sentencing laws in Illinois will be changed and for a return to parole. Kevin has a projected “out” date of January 2040.
