Item Description

Artwork Title: Beachcomber
Artist: Andrea Utne

All information was provided by the artist in their own words.

Materials: "Hyper Striper" artwork is about 3 ft. wide x 1 ft. tall and made of .5 in. Versatex (PVC). Beach glass, periwinkles, mussels, mermaid toenails, china, aluminum, ink, super glue, acrylic paint & Kamar varnish.

Description: My Beachcomber Hyper Striper was inspired by what drifts up onto the sand as the tide goes out and after storms here on the North Shore and Cape Ann. My initial idea was to comb the beaches of Beverly the day after I picked up my Striper looking for flotsam and jetsam but I was happily surprised by how clean the beaches were that day. The only things I found were a 12 inch length of distressed rope and a few pieces of beach glass. So my plans changed and for the next 6 days as the tides went out I visited the shores, from Fishermans Beach in Swampscott to Pavilion Beach in Gloucester, searching for these treasures and happily, a dear friend aided me in my search on one of those mornings. Designing the mosaic of beach glass, shells and a few pieces of china was a meditative process of generating alternatives before settling on the design of the finished piece. What a wonderful way to be able to contribute to Art in the Park 2021, by simply strolling along the beautiful shores of Massachusetts. My hope is that whoever brings my Beachcomber home has experienced the surprise and discovery of the many delights that wash up on our magnificent coastline.

About the Artist: I am both a plein air and studio artist, working alla prima in oils, watercolors and ink with a Bachelor in Architectural Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. The sea, landscapes and ordinary objects make for wonderful compositions that bring me delight, whether a blustery day with white caps and wild surf, delicious fruits or the humble boots and tools of a construction worker. All are beautiful and evoke our senses and memory.
