Item Description

Artwork Title: The Great American Striper
Artist: Jeffrey McKenzie

All information was provided by the artist in their own words.

Materials: "Hyper Striper" artwork is about 3 ft. wide x 1 ft. tall and made of .5 in. Versatex (PVC). I have layered the top with reclaimed wood from a barn in Sturbridge, MA. I then arrange the wood to its specific shape. It is then torched to bring out the beauty of the grain in the wood. I then paint the stripes and stars with acrylic latex paints. All.

Description: The Great American Striper is inspired by freedom and sacrifice! This handcrafted Striper is made with pride while utilizing salvaged wood from a barn in Sturbridge, MA. The wood is then torched to bring out the natural beauty of the grain. Burning the wood shows the true character of wood. It is then painted with acrylic latex paints (colonial red, navy blue, white). The scales are hand carved into the wood to mimic the skin of a fish. The stars are cut and painted with white acrylic paint later. I have applied multiple coats of epoxy and a exterior spar urethane to enjoy indoors or outdoors. The multiple coats will protect it from outdoor elements. A great piece of Americana to enjoy anywhere!

About the Artist: My name is Jeffrey McKenzie and I was born and raised in Beverly. I have always had a passion for working with my hands. So I became a carpenter 18 years ago specializing in finish carpentry. I also have a love and passion for woodworking. In my free time I handcraft American flags out of reclaimed wood. I enjoy the planning and building aspect of carpentry. Especially when you take a piece of wood and turn it into a piece of art.
