Description: Each morning as I walk to the sunrise I am reminded of the beauty of where we live. Sunrise as seen from Lynch Park is different. As different as a snowflake. The call of the sea. The smell, sounds, mystery, history. This connection with place and time is the inspiration for Sunrise Striper. The base layer on the front of the fish is a collage of old Beverly maps and copies of letters that my father sent home to his parents in Beverly, while he served in the Navy in WWII. The letters felt to me, like a love letter connection to the past, the sea, the world and also a nod to the idea of a message in a bottle. Patterns of the waves, sand, architecture, trees, clouds also interest me for their history, for their interest and their nod to craft. I created a stencil of an oversize Striper scale to use on the front and the back of the fish as a layer of texture. The texture helps the colors to glisten in the sun. The sunrise and splash from April 7, 2021 is reflected on the front of the fish. The back is painted in fun shimmery colors to reflect the light and also includes the scale pattern.

About the Artist: Paula Borsetti is an artist living and working in Beverly. Her studio is a converted garage where she works in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking & mixed media work. My work is exploration and play. I am inspired by the natural world around me from the coast, marshes and woods to my favorite place in Maine. I am also interested in my past, my family and their stories to find personal connection in each piece. In addition to painting in her studio Paula, along with her husband Joe, established Locust Street Studios where they are collaborating on creating custom painted paddles, shaped signs and hand-carved/painted whirligigs. Paula participates in many local exhibits and shows each year at the Annual Trustees of Reservations art show at the Crane Estate. This is her second year participating in Art in the Park.
