The Vintage: Hot, cold, hot, hot, cold. 2017 was an interesting vintage. We saw more days well nover 100 degrees fahrenheit than we have had in the last 10 years. We also had several prolonged below average cool periods through the growing season. All this made the grapes get very close to being ready to pick early and then made us wait while the cool weather allowed more hang time and thusly flavor development. Though wine is always our focus, 2017 will forever be remembered for the incredibly deady and destructive fires that tore through Northern California's wine country.

The Wine: Vibrant is the theme that runs through the 2017 Proprietor's Reserve Zinfandel. Once poured in the glass, you will see a color that is a vibrant garnet. The nose opens with aromas of red and purple fruits, drawing to cherries and mixed berry pie. Blood oranges, sweet, whipped cream, and freshly ground coffee beans all interweave with black pepper, baking spices, cardamom, rosemary, and potpourri. Flavors of bright, juicy fruits enveloped in a lovely texture are you reward for your first sip. Then more notes of bread dough and browned butter are present as well as spices, dried flowers and toasty oak tones. There is a nice acidity to the wine that helps keep the palate throughout the drinking experience.
