Item Description
The story of the Chiricahua Apaches is one of perseverance and tenacity, of courage and sorrow, and of triumph and tragedy. A fiction writer could not have come up with a more unbelievable story; one filled with action, interesting people, emotion, and uncanny twists of fate. This book is intended to be a documentation of the important events that occurred throughout the fascinating history of the Chiricahua Apaches. It is a compilation of the major episodes relating to Apacheria, and is intended for the general reader to use for reference. Its purpose is so anyone, whether researcher or novice to this subject, can pick it up and follow significant accounts that occurred, in sequence, in the complex story of the Chiricahua Apaches. The item up for bid is signed by the author.
Bill Cavaliere moved to the Portal area back in 1978. He worked first as a volunteer at the Southwest Research Station, then was employed with the US Forest Service in the Chiricahua Mountains, where one of his favorite duties was manning the Barfoot fire lookout. He eventually went into a career in law enforcement, all of it on the border, from which he retired after 28 years. He is the former sheriff of Hidalgo County, NM, just across the state line from Portal. He is an avid birder, is president of the Cochise County Historical Society, and sits on the board of the Arizona Historical Society.
