Item Description

Sometimes we Midwesterners look outside the region for great flies, and Diane Wantz, Program Lead for Willoughby, Ohio has done that when she contacted Michael Glenn Thomas. Mr. Thomas a retired Naval Officer who lives in Dumfries, Virginia, has offered two collections of flies for Holy Waters. In the second offering, there are 12 top water flies to attract many freshwater species.

Michael is a retired Vice President of Parsons Corporation, a retired Naval Officer and Naval Aviator qualified in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. Primary aircraft flown was the SH-2 Sea-Sprite, an anti-submarine helicopter flown from the perpetually moving deck of destroyers.

He is an avid flinger of flies and has been tying them for over 25 years. He believes fly tying and fishing are just what the busy world needs. Whether in a stream, raft or flats boat, there is no equal to catching the prey with a fly you have tied. He equally enjoys stalking trout, as he does chasing warm and saltwater fish.

He is also a collector of books on fly fishing, tying, ichthyology, and entomology with a library of over 600 volumes, including 250 editions of Izaak Walton's The Complete Angler, the oldest of which is the 5th edition of 1676. His favorite quote sums up the passion for using a fly:

"Around the steel no tortured worm shall twine,
No blood of living insect stain my line:
Let me, less cruel, cast the feathered hook
With pliant rod athwart the pebbled brook,
Silent along the mazy margin stray,
And with the fur-wrought fly delude the prey."
John Gay 1880, Rural Sports:

Donated by Michael Glenn Thomas through the Willoughby program.
