Item Description
This hand-poured set of 10 solid bronze Asian weights on a teakwood stand was made to the donor's order in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, in early 1985. The stand is 19.25 inches long and 3.625 inches tall at its tallest end. The smallest of the weights (all of which are shaped like modern Asian elephants) is just one ounce, whereas the largest weighs one kilogram (2 lbs., 5 ounces), with each of the others progressively heavier or lighter.
Item Special Note
Often erroneously referred to as "opium weights," some centuries-old weights still turn up for sale, in various styles. from as far away as Burma, Thailand and Cambodia.
