Item Description

This beautiful 14-inch rainbow trout carving was done by Carl A. Rettenberger. This carving takes Carl 7 hours per inch to complete, so 98 hours of work was put into this beautiful piece, and the price is well worth the item!

Carl is a retired professional engineer and land surveyor who resides in Frederick County, VA, just northwest of Winchester. Since the age of 10, his passions have always been fly fishing and fly tying. More recently, he has gotten into trout carving, and spends a good deal of his time carving brook, brown, cutthroat, and rainbow trout replicas, which he donates to various people and organizations. We always love when we receive these donations from Carl!

With this background, it is easy to see how and why that in 2011, he got involved with PHWFF. Since that time, he has taught fly casting and fly tying, as well as serving as a volunteer guide for the Martinsburg, WV program. In addition, he has served in the same capacity for other PHWFF programs in West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. As such, he has met and made friends with a lot of great veterans and active service men and women who have served and continue to serve our country proudly.

Carl was never called to serve his country, so since 2012, creating and donating his carvings to PHWFF as fundraisers is his way of giving back to those who served and continue to serve this great country.

All of the templates used to create his carvings are created in AutoCad from photographs of actual trout that he or other fly fisherman have caught. Except for cutting out the general shape of the replica on a bandsaw, each replica is hand carved from Basswood blocks using only hand tools. When the hand carving part of the project is complete, he carefully and faithfully paints each fish to match that shown in the given photographs, using both an air brush and hand brush.
