Item Description

Add a taste of Africa to your table with these unusual shovel-shaped serving tongs.

  • 9 inches x 3 inches
  • made from lovely grained olive wood
  • with polka dot black and white decorative insets of polished animal horn or bone.
  • CARE: Hand wash, dry immediately. Rub with a little olive oil to keep the richness of the grain.

 STORY:

These tongs are named for a strong woman who as a widow shouldered the burden of providing for a family of twelve, including grown brothers who could not find work. She used to beg outside the mosque, especially at Ramadan. But with Village of Love micro-loans and training, she has built a thriving spice and fabric business. Shilye has passed her feminist values on to her daughters (one now pursues a traditionally male career as a plumber) and she berates any man who does not respect his wife who brings in money!

From the Village of Love Craft Store, Toronto.

Proceeds from this item benefits Village of Love.
