Item Description
The Vivaldi Board™ï¸Â has become a key tool in the Pacific Northwest in managing hive temperature and moisture.
Invented by John Edwards 15 years ago , the combination Vivaldi Board™ï¸Â and Vivaldi Screen was developed to address the moisture problems of the North West. The screened vent slots provide ventilation in the hot months and mitigates moisture build-up. The Vivaldi Screen™ï¸Â enables moisture to efficiently wick moisture into the Vivaldi board by increasing the surface area of absorption. We use burlap but you can also use sheep wool, cedar shavings or other natural material. You can also provide emergency winter feeding of Drivert sugar directly through the screen. We find that the bees love congregating under the Vivaldi Screen in winter because it is the warmest spot in the hive.
A telescoping lid may cover the ventilation slot, but this is intentional as the small gap between the lid and board still allows adequate air flow while protecting from harsh weather.
Beekeeping and Symbiosis
As any experienced beekeeper will quickly tell you, the word beekeeper is a misnomer. We don't keep bees in cages or on leashes. We have little control of their welfare; we only influence it in the hope of some reward such as honey and pollination. This symbiotic relationship can be elusive and occasionally challenging.
Our passion at Hive & Garden is to help you navigate through the challenges and decisions of beekeeping, such as type of hive, type of honeybee, and approach to colony management. All these decisions present a trade-off in hive management. Our mission is to help you understand these trade-offs, and pick the type of beekeeping that feels right for you.
