Item Description

Cork McGee signed, Carved and Painted Heron. Bird is standing on a piece of driftwood.  Overall height is approximately 11".  Signature and date on underside of base, Cork McGee Chincoteague VA 08.

Carlton "Cork" McGee, age 90, was born and raised in Chincoteague, VA, and spent a lifetime observing the wildfowl of the area, mostly through hunting. He started his artistic career in the 1950s by carving duck decoys from old refrigeration cork and balsa wood scavenged from World War II lifeboats. A few years later Cork was inspired by an artist friend, Miles Hancock, to try his hand at carving shorebirds and songbirds with a hatchet and an old knife. A hunting buddy started bringing him basswood from a sawmill in Pennsylvania, which he used for the bodies, and he made the bills and beaks from oak. Cork originally sold his carvings at area crafts shows, but now that critics consider his birds to be "fine high-end collectibles with outstanding paint and form," they are sold online to collectors all over the world.
