Item Description

From the Kalahari region of South Africa come these gorgeous, quilted cushion covers, showcasing the creativity of the KhoiSan people (Settler Europeans called them Hottentots and Bushmen).

  • Each one is unique. Individually crafted, these items feature Mantis, or !Kagan, the Trickster in !Xam mythology. One shows a Praying Mantis, Springbok, Insect and Snake (reverse side is orange); the other shows a Praying Mantis Mantis and Beetles (reverse side is dark gold).
  • From the Bethesda Arts Centre in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.
  • Dimensions in inches: 14.5 x 14.5.
  • The reverse side has an opening and inside fold to hold the cushion.

In South Africa, the Khoi and San tribes call the praying mantis Hottentotsgot, which means God of the Bushmen. There is also an African belief that a mantis landing on a person is an omen of good luck.
