Item Description

This exquisite set of 3 miniature Decorative Soapstone Bowls was handcrafted from Kenyan steatite, known widely as soapstone. Kenya's Kisii region contains vast deposits of steatite, and artisans there specialize in the carving of the soft stone, creating functional art that is collected around the world.

These deep blue bowls are beautifully decorated with a star pattern and tiny yellow dots that look like stars over the ocean. The nesting bowls measure 2.25 inches, 3 inches, and 4 inches in diameter, and each one is signed by the artist. These bowls are works of art that could be displayed in your home on a table, shelf, or nightstand. You could use them to hold your pocket change, or put your rings or other jewelry in them when you take it off.

This set of 3 Decorative Soapstone Bowls was purchased from Give Us Wings, a Minnesota charity that works with the poorest of the poor living in forgotten villages in Kenya and Uganda. Their focus is on three areas:

  • Health care. In collaboration with community groups, Give Us Wings built clinics in rural Uganda and in rural Kenya that provide affordable, quality health to thousands of people each year.
  • Education. Give Us Wings offers adult literacy programs and women's educational opportunities because people who lack education earn less money to support their families, are less likely to send their children to school, and are less likely to seek medical treatment for themselves and their children.
  • Entrepreneurial and livelihood development. Give Us Wings has helped the people in rural areas form cooperative societies where members are trained to identify profitable cash crops, establish marketing chains that make it possible for members to access farming equipment at lower cost, improve their productivity, and bulk their harvested crops together so that they get a higher price at market. They are currently working with 6 cooperatives located in 3 districts in Eastern Uganda. The membership of the coops exceeds 3,500 people, 80% of whom are women.
