Item Description
Zambia exports much of the world's copper, but very little is used locally. An inspired group of young Zambian women are defying gender norms in their country by striving to master the art of metalsmithing with the copper. Their organization is called the Foundation for the Realization of Economic Empowerment (F.R.E.E.).
This pair of Copper Viridian Equilateral Earrings is an example of their craft. The square (equilateral) copper earrings have oxidized to a lovely blue-green (viridian) patina, with just traces of the original copper color remaining. These statement pieces celebrate the right of all women to be free to choose their own path.
These earrings were handcrafted for Swahili Imports, a member of the Fair Trade Federation, which helps Zambian women earn money to support themselves and their families.
