Item Description
These Mobile Earrings are reminiscent of the early works of artist Alexander Calder and his kinetic sculptures, which were first called "mobiles" by Marcel Duchamp in 1931. Caldor started by making sculptures of discrete movable parts powered by motors, which he eventually thought were monotonous because of their prescribed movements. His solution was hanging sculptures that derived their motion from touch or from air currents. Soon he transitioned to outdoor pieces that were set in motion by the open air. The wind mobiles featured abstract shapes delicately balanced on pivoting rods that moved with the slightest current of air, allowing for a natural shifting play of forms and their spatial relationships.
These earrings from the Guggenheim Museum Gift Shop were made by David Howell & Company. They were inspired by Caldor's work on kinetic sculptures, or sculptures in which motion is a defining property. They are made of solid brass with a giclee print, and they have hypo-allergenic ear wires. They hang approximately 2 inches.
