Item Description
Handmade by Diane De Baun, this Raku offering bowl is imprinted in the bottom with the double vajra or dorje motif and fired with blue and gold glazes.
The vajra is a Buddhist and Vedic symbol which in Sanskrit means 'the hard and mighty one' and is used to denote the indestructible path of Vajrayana Buddism or the 'diamond path'. Dorje is the Tibetan term. "The Buddhist vajra symbolizes the impenetrable, imperishable, immovable, immutable, indivisible, and indestructible state of absolute reality, which is the enlightenment of Buddhahood. The thunderbolt or vajra is sometimes described as a dicus with a central hole with two crossed bladed bars or alternated described as a notched metal club with a thousand metal spikes. It is said the Buddha took this wrathful weapon from Indra and bent the spikes or prongs inward created the peaceful form of this scepter. The crossed or double Vajra, also called Universal is described as four loti mounted vajras heads that emanate from a central hub towards the four cardinal directions, and symbolize the principle of absolute stability. In the cosmographic description of Mt Meru a vast vishna-vajra supports or underlies the entire physical universes."*
