Item Description

The successful bidder for this item will receive a Zion Rust Shiboridashi hand-carved and glazed teapot and cup set from ceramicist Gary Bercow.

This set will add to the your home's ambiance, bringing a peace-filled tea time to your day. You and your guest will feel the warmth of the tea through the textured clay of the cups.

Gary compares his involvement with ceramics to spending time in a garden or the woods, a sense of satisfaction with the earth permeating him, pottery, hiking, and gardening, bringing him, and, through his ceramics, all of us, closer to our humanity.

He begins with creating a functional piece of pottery on the wheel, making it symmetrical and true. When the vessel nears completion, he starts to alter the piece by pushing and bending it to give it more of an organic, sensuous shape. After a day or two, when the piece has become what is known as leather hard, he cuts into the clay and carves the surface. He models his markings on natural objects he finds on his journeys in nature to give them a sense of being wood that is weathered and worn.

After the first firing, he uses a number of different colored stains on the carved surface, accenting the high areas and darkening the valleys. Every part of the process involves integrating nature into all the crevices of the pottery.
