About the Artist:

Hillary Howorth is a Nashville-based artist known for her unique, layered paintings. She was raised just outside of Greenville, South Carolina, but has made Tennessee her home after marrying a Nashville native ten years ago. They are now raising their three young boys in the ever-growing Music City.

Hillary is a self-taught, instinctual, contemporary and mixed media artist. Born into a family of do-it-yourselfers, creatives and musicians, her creativity and passion for the arts was encouraged and supported from an early age. Hillary has always felt the need to create and spent much of her childhood doing so through ballet, dance, choreography, drawing and design which led her to attend a fine arts high school part time in Greenville, SC. While Hillary has been creating works of art throughout her life, it was not until 2012 when home on bed rest during her first pregnancy with twin girls that she began painting. Continuing to pursue art was a way for Hillary to heal after that pregnancy ended in a tragic loss and it pushed her to uncover her authentic self. This new found love for painting ultimately led her to committing to art full time and leaving her job as a pediatric dental hygienist behind. She has now made a career out of her passion by learning to trust her own inclinations. Hillary hopes that when others view her art, that they see more than just circles and layers, but layers and layers of healing and moments of her beautifully complicated life.

Hillary’s collection of original contemporary art has been featured in House Beautiful Magazine, Home Design & Decor Magazine, At Home Arkansas, Serena & Lily, The Scout Guide, and SPANX. Her work incorporates countless layers of paint and mediums with variations of color that add texture and interest to each piece. Her layered technique is unconventional and requires the utmost precision and patience. Each piece is painted one layer at a time spanned over many weeks resulting in a beautifully textured and eye-catching work of art that you want to rub your hands across. Being self-taught has given Hillary the freedom to paint and explore outside traditional styles and techniques. Hillary feels that art shouldn’t have boundaries or parameters— there is no right or wrong way to express and create.
