Item Description
This antique porcelain temple jar was decorated for Rookwood Pottery of Cincinnati by designer Sara Sax in 1919. Sara Sax worked at Rookwood from 1896 until 1931, and is considered by collectors as one of the finest artists to have decorated pottery for Rookwood. Her French red vases are highly valued by collectors. She was in the forefront of Art Noveau, Art Deco and the Arts and Crafts movements at Rookwood.
This temple jar is glazed with the artist's signature French Red, and painted with exquisite fruit and floral design in black. Temple Jars may have once been used to hold the ashes of loved ones in a Buddhist Temple. Later the jars would hold spices, herbs, rice, and other dried goods. In modern times they are decorative pieces.
The bottom of the jar has the "S X" mark for Sara Sax. The company marks indicate manufacture by Rookwood and the date produced.
Details: 8" high and 20" wide at the widest point, 2 1/2" in diameter at opening and 3" in diameter at the base. The jar is in excellent condition--no chips, cracks, or crazing.
