Item Description
Mark Rea walks the beaches of Cape Cod and the Islands in the early summer every year. He picks the best of the horseshoe crab shells as the spawn in early summer. He makes plaster casts of each crab he has selected over the fall. He glazes and fires them in the spring. Each piece that comes out of its mold is then carefully trimmed and finished to reveal as much detail as possible. Then Mark's horseshoe crabs migrate back to the coast to galleries. This limited edition ceramic horseshoe crab measures 4.5" wide and 9" tall. Mark says of his horseshoe crabs that "This work is my tribute to an old friend and an ancient species."
