Item Special Note

FEATURED CAVA ARTIST
CHERI MCGUIRE

Cheri McGuire lives and works up in the vibrant Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. Home of the Chicago Mosaic Society, Berger Park Cultural Center, and the Edgewater Arts Festival, Cheri finds the lakeside environment an endless source of inspiration.

Coming from a fine arts background, inspired by Joseph Cornell, Eric Erickson and the curiosity boxes of the seventeenth century, Cheri takes her turn assembling themes in her ongoing series of “Odd Boxes." Using recycled, miniatures, vintage, toys, books, photos, artwork, natural elements, light and found objects, she locates them in boxes of all sizes, shapes, and incarnations. "I observe these objects, listen to their stories, and find them new homes," Cheri says.

Each box is unique and one-of-a-kind, with one or more vintage objects including vintage objects, selected texts and quotes from original sources, and even snippets from an 1842 English grammar book. "Look carefully, and you'll discover within the texts a connection to rest the box," says Cheri. "Look for a sarcastic, ironic, bizarre, or macabre twist in many of the boxes. The new meanings, jokes, and contexts are hiding in plain sight, patiently waiting for the viewer to discover, and enjoy."
