Item Description
A limited edition signed and numbered Lithograph of the "Shabbath" angels by the noted Jewish sculptor and artist Chaim Gross. Unframed print, 11-1/2 by 16-1/4 inches. #73/101
In describing the specific inspiration for "Shabbath", Gross wrote: "There is a biblical legend about this drawing... in the Talmud which quotes a Baraita (119b); two ministering angels accompany a father on a Friday night as he returns home after prayers from synagogue. One angel is a good one and the other one, on his left side, is an evil one. As the father nears home and is about to enter his doorway, all seems holy and peaceful. Candles are shining, the table is covered with a pure white cloth. All is golden with the beauty and holiness of the Shabbath. The evil angel flies away, for the light of goodness is too much for him. The good angel enters the home with joy."
