Item Description
OSV Tinner Richard Eckert produced this triangle lantern based on an original for the OSV Collection which is on display in the lighting exhibit. Triangle lanterns appear on a very limited basis in the period, most after 1840. While studying the original it was found that it is likely no earlier than 1842 due to the bead on the top cylinder, above and below the custom punched holes. That bead is produced using a machine which was invented and patented in 1842. The custom punch used to reproduce the design was created by OSV Director of Collections and Research Derek Heidemann in the OSV Blacksmith Shop. Differences from the original include a slide out door design since many folks have difficutly with hinged, and round tin feet. The original design has footing soldered from lead musket balls.
