"Stella's Shadow" by Dawn Jenkins

Artist Statement:

This year for the Festival of Cods, I wanted to create my cod in memory of my dog Stella. She flew over the Rainbow Bridge in 2021. For 10 years, Stella was always behind me or beside me just like a shadow. She and I made so many loving memories during our daily walks at Kings Beach in Lynn. Since her passing, I feel at time that Stella is still with me, hanging out in my shadow and so this was the premise of my cod creation. I first, painted the blank cod, then, I used many small pieces of tree bark to make a sculpture of a fish depicting Stella's body. Next, I placed the finished sculpture, on the blank cod which I feel mimics her shadow. I then added upcycled jewelry to make my cod as beautiful as Stella truly was and then I completed her by adding bubbles to make her as playful as I remember. Hence, the name "Stella's Shadow."

Artist Biography:

For the past 16 years, Dawn Jenkins has resided in the Diamond District of Lynn, near Kings Beach. For years, she found it profitable and pleasurable to refurbish, repaint, repurpose, and readorn anything she could remake, renew, and resell. In 2017 while walking her Boxer dog Stella, on the beach, her latest mixed media adventure "Bedazzled Fish" was born. Since 2005, Dawn has created many original art concepts. She attended Newbury School of Fashion Design, worked in the clothing manufacturing business and retired from a 23-year career at the MBTA. Dawn displays her work in local galleries and is an artist member at the Marblehead Arts Association (MAA), the Galleries at Lynn Arts (GALA) and the Salem Arts Association(SAA). She chooses to make her work affordable and hopes her art will bring those joy to those who happen upon them.

Item Special Note

Pick-up of purchased cods will be July 9-14 at MacRea's Goods, 108 Washington St, Marblehead during normal store hours. The winning bidder will receive a notification email with information on pick-up time and location.

If winning bidder requires shipping, winner's credit card will be charged a separate $24.95 fee to cover USPS ground and handling. Shipping is available within the U.S. only and must be requested within 7 days after receipt of the notification email.

Any cod purchased via "Buy Now" will remain on display at the hosting business through the end of the auction, and will be available for pick-up as detailed in the winning bidder notification email.

If winning bidder has not picked up cod (or provided shipping address) within 30 days after the close of the auction, cod will become the property of Marblehead Festival of Arts, Inc.
