Item Description

"Garden Cod" by Katie Appleton

Medium: Mixed Media Collage

Size: 19" x 8"

Artist Statement:

The cods that I created for this auction in previous years were all painted, which is the medium I use most often. This year, I wanted to try something new, so I decided to experiment with mixed media. I used to raise and study monarch butterflies with my kindergarten classes, and I was always struck by the butterflies' beauty when they were flying around our garden waystation. I envisioned a gust of butterflies flying in a pack across my cod above a small garden of flowers. While collecting materials though, I found a set of fabric flowers that I began to arrange along the bottom of the cod. I quickly realized that the flowers were becoming the focus of my piece. Instead of a large group of butterflies, I decided to highlight a few butterflies fluttering over a garden of flowers in my favorite color palette.

Artist Biography:

I am an elementary school teacher who loves to incorporate art into my curriculum. I grew up in Marblehead and now live in Cambridge. I began taking art lessons at the age of 8, and in high school decided that I wanted to focus on oil painting. I took lessons for three years with Debra and Jack Highberger in their portfolio program at Acorn Gallery in Marblehead, and I'm so grateful for the incredible training I received from them. Over the years I have exhibited artwork in the Marblehead Festival of Arts-in the Painting, Photography, Drawing, Crafts, and Mixed Media exhibits. I have received an Honorable Mention award in the Painting exhibit. I recently served on the Festival's Board of Directors as Director of Exhibits (2017 & 2018), and as co-chair of the Festival's Painting Exhibit (2015 & 2016). I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Washington University in St. Louis with a minor in Fine Art, and a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University. In addition to my involvement with the Festival, I am also a member of the Board of Trustees of Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead, where I serve on the Executive Committee as Recording Secretary. Art is my passion and hobby, and I try to find ways to pursue it in my free time.
