ABOUT EILEEN FINKEL

Eileen Finkel was an extraordinary and accomplished individual. She lived a full life, passing away peacefully at the ripe young age of 95 with her children at her side. Fiercely independent and decidedly ahead of her time, she was one of the very first women admitted to Penn State’s School of Engineering.  She graduated with a degree in industrial engineering in 1947 and went on to become an assistant editor of American Machinist Magazine.

Later, with  her husband, she co-owned and led Baar & Beards, an accessories company that specialized in ladies’ scarves. She had a remarkable ability to visualize and an exceptional eye for design and color. Using her engineering background, she taught herself the design process and in the 1970’s and 1980’s, collaborated closely with and designed for many industry leaders, including Diane von Furstenberg, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Peter Max and Gant Gaither. The beautiful scarves to be auctioned are a combination of samples and designer classics who inspired her over several decades.
