Item Description
This Storm Design Navajo rug was purchased in 1992 from the Nambe Trading Post in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Included in this bid is the original receipt, and the attached price tag that says Raquel Begay, Storm. The Begay family are well known weavers.
The rug is a petite size 21 ½ x 34". It makes a spectacular wall hanging. It is attached with velcro to a stick for hanging, which is apparently how it has been displayed. Imagine how it would look in your home!
The color in this Storm piece is grey, black and red with the traditional design. Small black tassels on both corners and cream colored selvedge cords on the sides further indicate that this is likely a genuine Navajo Rug.
According to the receipt the rug was purchased for $460.00 in 1992. With inflation this rug has the value of roughly $900.
Each culture has a unique mythology that’s passed down from generation to generation. For the Navajo, this is captured in the beautiful and mysterious designs of the Storm Pattern weaving. Some say it tells the story of the Navajo Creation and Evolution of how they rose from the underworld, to the present day Navajo Land.
Historians and weavers alike believe that the central rectangle represents something of historical significance, such as a lake, Navajo Hogan, or even the very center of the Navajo Universe. Originating from the Crystal Trading Post (before the banded design revival), Storm Patterns have always maintained a strong central element connected by diagonal stepped lines to each corner, representing the four sacred mountains surrounding the Navajo Nation.
