As a group of friends we wanted to tie in a birthday, Mum-get-away and relaxation. We chose Hilltop House as a holiday rental. It is just lovely, cozy, relaxing, has stunning views and a hot tub. Truly beautiful. Not even the four hour drive would put me off going again. I can’t recommend enough!

ABOUT THE INNKEEPERS
Three generations of our children and grandchildren share the Hilltop House Bed & Breakfast! It might not seem so, because most are in an adjacent space and have grown up B&B-ified. It helps to make our house in the Hudson River Valley a home and fills each day with a real sense of purpose, caring and joy. We’re proud of that and the children who grace this house. Owning an inn has always been a dream of ours. We get up in the morning with breakfast to prepare, and we’ve gotten very good at it. Our guests aren’t afraid to ask for special breakfast wants, or needs. (You can request ahead of time, or try us. We probably have just what you need and want.) The rest of the day we sort out what needs to be done–the shopping, the laundry, cleaning–and it all comes down to making people happy. Ourselves included! Isn’t that what it’s all supposed to be about? We think so.

Hilltop House Bed & Breakfast is nestled atop a gentle hill with several neighboring dairy farms in New York’s Dutchess County, just 3 miles from the Connecticut border. Its country town locale in Amenia, NY is hub to some of the best boarding schools on the east coast and the culture they radiate. Clever shops dot all the towns in the area; antiquing is rampant, with shops of all sizes (don’t be afraid to negotiate), and the inevitable yard sale for the curious!

Add to that, attractions such as Sharon Playhouse’s summer stock featuring musical productions, wing shooting and horse trials in Millbrook, Lime Rock racetrack’s SCCA racing, fly fishing on the Housatonic River, hiking the New York to Connecticut crossover of the Appalachian Trail, biking on the Harlem Valley rail trail, and fine dining and beer and wine making, as well as distilleries within a 15-30-minute drive.

Forty minutes to 4 ski areas—Catamount (due North in South Egremont, MA), Butternut (Northeast in Great Barrington, MA), Thunder Ridge (South in Patterson, NY) and Mohawk (due east in Cornwall, CT), where they invented snow making!
