Barbara Johansen Newman has been an artist for close to 50 years. First, as a performing puppeteer after studying with Bil Baird at his theater in New York. During that time, she also became an award-winning fiber artist. In Boston she embarked on a 35-year career as an illustrator for editorial work and an illustrator/author of children's books. Finally, in 2017 she returned to her first love: painting. She has been showing her art throughout the US in galleries and museums ever since.
Using acrylics, Barbara Johansen Newman paints portraits of both people and animals, and in doing so tells a story of who or what they are and what they do or like. "Farsighted, Executive Kitty" is one of those. Clearly, he has been reading too many documents at the office lately.
